I once tried to decode the lyrics to " A Horse With No Mane "..... "

I was wondering about that song with the line 'I can see Deidre now, Lorraine has gone. I can see all obstacles in my way' That seems pretty disrespectful to both women!

Hilarious !! Someone needs to COLLECT all of these !

Ha ha. Yes I agree. Misheard lyrics database

OTOH, my tastes dance like a dervisch on Tourette's with Cerebral Palsy. I have most of these disorders so I'm ENTITLED to make jokes. Ar ! Ar !ar !

ok so many thoughts:

1. thank you for this, I needed a deep belly chuckle today

2. NO, i did not know. Which begs the real question, how are you ok delivering such bad news? Why couldn't you just let us continue to belt this song at parties, bars, weddings, etc. -- While I appreciate your investigative journaling, I would also appreciate you letting us live in blissful ignorance.

3. Pina Coladas rule, full stop.

4. This was most definitely not a fantasy role playing game. So I agree that your wife is wrong with that take. Sadboi was the 70s equivalent to the effboi of our time. As for Midnight Lover, I have no words for her either.

5. Sand everywhere, IN everywhere. THEN it rains. My worst nightmare.

When I was a kid in school there was another idiot kid who used to go around yelling "If you like penis colada"

Our local version of this is “penis a lotta”

I am so sorry it took you such a long time to find out the truth of this song. It horrified me in 1979 and I was a young lass then. This song was a terrible example of love and marriage to an impressionable 14 year old!!

Expand full comment

Exactly! I was 16 and just old enough to date and 'Escape' was constantly on the airwaves. 🙄

That's like the characters Michael Bluth and Maeby Fünke in Arrested Development when they sang "Afternoon Delight" in duet and realized halfway into the song what it was about. Lol!

Expand full comment

As a child I thought Afternoon Delight was about ice cream sundaes. Of course. And 'sky rockets in flight' was because everyone was so thrilled to be eating the ice cream!

Here goes:

1. Of course I did. I always pay attention to lyrics.

2. Sure. Fictional characters in idiotic songs always end up okay.

3. As Meat Loaf said, I would do anything for love, but I won’t do the Pina Colada song.

4. “Born in the USA”

5. Hi, Alex.

6. Okay, I won’t. It was terrible anyway.

7. Huntington Dog Beach.

8. Didn’t see it.

Welcome to the Right Coast, boychik!

I’ve always wondered what “that” was (the thing Meatloaf said he wouldn’t do). Ditto for the “that” in Hall & Oates’ “I Can’t Go For That.” Like, what’s their respective definitions of a bridge too far?

Expand full comment

As a kid I thought it was marriage that Meatloaf wouldn’t do, since I grew up in 70s and my dad refused to marry my stepmother (together 40 years but never married). But Meatloaf said that the answer was in his lyrics, the last line before every chorus: he’ll “never stop dreaming of you,” “never forget the way you feel right now,” “never forgive myself if we don’t go all the way,” and “never do it better than I do it with you.” I find that answer far less interesting than the open ended question though!

I've never liked that song, found it a bit worrisome...

Right?!

Glad it's not just me. And that Hotel California is another creepy one.... hahahahahaha It's coming back to me one song at a time.

Expand full comment

Omg yes I interviewed Sting once and he talked about how creepy it was the number of people who tell them Every breath You Take was their wedding song since its hook was more Big Brother & govt surveillance. (Kinda like Eye in the Sky by Alan Parsons Project but creepier because nobody has that as their wedding song.)

Rupert Holmes -- just in time for tomorrow's alphabet challenge!

Absolutely! What other songs will pop up? That title is more known than the artist’s name.

I can't believe I read this! hahahahahahahhahahah I knew the song and what it is about. One day I said I need to listen to it all way through to find out what happens and guess what. I did! But did I miss a point? Listen, you better join us for our song title poetry and come up with some some more songs to disect like this. Tomorrow is Day H, so Holmes fits right in. But your exposé made me think of Babooshka too, Kate Bush song. Similar theme?

this song is about two assholes who deserve each other. p.s. if you think this song is f'ed up, listen to "Timothy," recorded by The Buoys, also written by Rupert Holmes.
