Alex I think you're one of the funniest people on Substack. Thank you for engaging with my ~content~! It took me three and a half years to write my latest novel. If I spent three and a half years on a Substack post, I would kill myself. (Joking!!)
I too am gobsmacked by the art/content definition Leigh put forward. And also quite sad because right now my art is my newsletter so if it's all content I have no art (or rather I have art that is getting written at a glacial pace over on the side somewhere in the form of my memoir essays that take foreveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrr)...
I think all of it is whatever you want it to be! What I really admire about Leigh's pov is that she knows what her posts on Substack are for and thus is maybe a lot less personally attached to the outcome of each? Idk though, would be curious what she says about that Leigh if you see this let us know
I think art is more of a crafted cathartic thing that speaks to the creator / muse / culture or time that it comes to life in, and content is material that’s purposefully made to provoke an intended reaction to an “audience” in mind. Art can become content but you can’t force content to be art.
How to write funny! You’re so good at not only doing that but also helping others find it in their writing. I’ve had a few people mention they want their writing to be funnier but don’t know where to start, so I think there’s a demand!
p.s. about that unpaid internship... I already applied, didn't I??! never heard back from you... ha ha you thought I was kidding. one note: I don't do TikTok... but I can write in lower case with the best of them.
answer to #1: teach us how to be funny, in an improv sort of way. Charge A LOT for a small group of us on Zoom. let us practice and interact with you in real time. Assign some sort of "prep" reading or writing beforehand; and offer one "follow-up" editorial review of something we've written (cuz we learned it from you) where we're trying to be funny. idk, US$250?
