Wanna write consistently? Donate to Trump if you don't.
Or whoever you hate, but like probably it's Trump right?
A few months ago, I sent $100 to my friend Paul Millerd on Venmo. I told Paul to donate the $100 to Trump unless I published four blog posts on Substack by the end of the month.
It worked in February, it worked in March, and as soon as I publish this piece, it will have worked in April.
So…that’s pretty cool. Here’s a pro and cons analysis of this strategy thus far:
I spend three weeks of every month chilling, usually publishing one piece in that time, and then scramble during the final week to get three pieces done before the month ends.
Like right now, I’m stressed about getting this out - and fast! - which means I’m rushing to get something done rather than working on some of the longer pieces I’ve been stewing on.
So the strategy is a solid one, but I think it needs refining. I’m gonna maybe set a more regular cadence with it, like I need to publish one piece per week, maybe? I don’t know. Whatever happens, just know that I will be writing more next month because, and I cannot stress this enough, I will never give $ to Trump .

Welcome to all the new readers! We are up to 143 people strong, which honestly? Is very dope. I’m excited to keep writing in here and so allow me to ask, full of shame, to please share this with anyone you think might dig it. I tell my parents whenever I get a single new subscriber - it helps ward off them bringing up grad school, so please - help me help me. Just click this button below and I’m sure the Internet will do the rest.
Also, if you’re new here, below are a few of my favorite pieces that I’ve written that you maybe just maybe want to check out:
I Was Born in Odessa Ukraine: This was an essay I wrote a few days after the war started in Ukraine about how it feels to watch the war from the safety of America.
How It Feels To Be A Dad: A few analogies on the first 9 months of fatherhood.
Mark As Spam: A short story about the spam folder in your e-mail.
A recommendation: Where Should We Begin?
I’ve been listening to a lot of Where Should We Begin by Esther Perel. It’s a podcast where you just get to snoop and listen into a real couple’s actual therapy session! It feels illegal, or like something you’d only get to watch on Skinemax except instead of Skin they’re baring their Souls. And then every so often the session will pause and Esther will explain what’s she is seeing, why she decides to take the conversation in a certain direction, etc. It’s like watching game tape with Michael Jordan except therapy! Wow.
Ok, that’s all for now. See you guys in early May.
